Finally, at Pingualuit Crater, I was caught off guard when other people arrived by snowmobile. They’d come to fish for Lake Trout and landlocked Arctic Char, and also to explore the crater. I’d met a couple of them in town and hung out with them at the crater for a while until the consistently nasty weather broke. We checked out Pingualuit Crater which is a globally significant site and the second-most impressive meteor impact sight in the world. We also built an iglu, well, I mostly watched as they built one. It was freezing cold and I actually got frostbite on my thumb shooting that iglu scene and taking the thumbnail pic. I could barely sleep that night because of the throbbing pain. I traded a lantern for a good pair of sealskin mitts with one of them before I headed on my way and soon began descending the frozen Povungnatuk River, pushing hard to the Hudson Bay coast but the weather was not on my side.
